ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER. RETIREMENT IN NOVEMBER. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received October 7, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 6 It is reported that Sir Wyndham Childs, Assistant-Commissioner of Metropolitan Police and bead of the Criminal Investigation Department, is to retire next month, following his chief, Sir illiam Ilorwood, Commissioner, who is to retire on November 6. Viscount Byng will succeed Sir \\ illiam Ilorwood, so that a complete change will be effected in the administration of tho London police organisation. The Home Secretary, Sir \\ illiam Joyuson-Hicks, is now searching for a new Assistant-Commis-sioner. Major-General Sir Wyndham Childs has been Assistant-Commissioner Metropolitan Police since 1921. He was born in December, 1876. He entered the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. 1900; was captain in tho Royal Irish Regiment, 1810; brevet major, 1912; major Duke of Corn-a all s Light Infantry, 1915; brevet lieutenantcolonel, 1917; colonel, 1919; brigadiergeneral. 1916; temporary major-general, 1917; staff captain at the War Office,l9ll- - assistant adjutant-general, 1916; director cf personal services, \\ at Office, 1916-19; deputy adjutant-general to the forces 1919-21. Ho served m the Luro- ! near. War and retired in 1922 created K.C.M.G., 1919, and k:B.L., 1921.
