GOLF TOURNAMENT.
SOUTH AUCKLAND TITLE. EASY WIN FOR J. L. BLACK. M. OTWAY DEFEATS CORBETT. I'nY TEEEGR A PH.—-OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 HAMILTON, Sunday. The South Auckland men's golf tournament was concluded yesterday in delightful weather. Tltero was a large, crowd on (he links in the afternoon, and tho finals in tho principal events were followed with keen interest. J. L. Black (Otorohanga) won the South Auckland championship, defeating A. Stichbury (Hamilton), 8 and 6, while M. Otway (Kihikihi) wan the St. Andrew's match. All the trophies were annexed by visiLing competitors. The results of yesterday's matches were as follows: — South Auckland Championship.—Semifinal: J. L Black (Otorohanga) defeated C. Brit tain (Rotorua), 1 up; A. Stichbnry ( Wellington) defeated If. T. Gillies (Hamilton), 4 and 2. Final: Black defeated Stichbury. 8 and 6. St. Andrew's Match. —Semi-final: J. Corbett (Te Awamutu) defeated P. llalligan (Te, Aioha), 3 and 2; M. Otway (Kihikihi) defeated W. Brosnahan (Morrinsville), 3 and 2. Final: Otway defeated Corbett, 3 and 1. A medal handicap played yesterday morning was; won by R. O'Neil, 82, 12 — 70. The play-off in the tie between E. C. Banks (Matamata), N. H. Hockin (Maungakiekio) and I'. G. Russell (Hamilton), who each scored 70 on Friday morning, resulted in a win for Banks, his score being 86, 17-69. The pairs best ball bogey handicap, played yesterday afternoon, was won by J. M. and N. H. Hockin, 8 up. J. Forbes and C. Hcrrold, G. Middleton and W. Garland., ami W. D. Ross and R. G. Guy tied for' second place, 7 up. Jn the final for (lie championship, the first two holes were halved and Black took (he third in 3—4, and won the next three. Stichbury won the seventh in 5—6. Black won (lie following five holes and (ho game ended in Black's favour, 8 up and 6 to play. Tn tho final of (he St. Andrew's match, both Otway and Corbett were off their game during tho first half of (ho contest. Corbett was 3 up at the ninth, when he unfortunately played another player's ball. Tho next few holes were halved and then Otway won five holes in succession with good golf. Tho J 7th was won by Otway, giving him tho game 3 up and 1 to play. At the conclusion of the tournament. Dr. 11. Douglas, president of (lie Hamilton Goll Club, congratulated the winners on their success, and expressed delight that the visitors should have won all the trophies, lie trusted they 1 would return and defend the titles. Iho arrangements for the tournament wero splendidly carried out by Mr. G Morpeth, club captain, Mr. E. P. OlaytonGteene, secretary, and Mr. S. Simmonds, who acted as scorer. Praise is also due to the club's professional, Mr. F. Branch, who was responsible for tlio fine condition of tho links.
