UNEMPLOYMENT.
Sir, —Personally, my convinced opinion is that unemployment in a new country such as this is duo to unionism to a great extent, and to Arbitration Court awards that practically penalise the worker and the employer equally, and to too much interference and competition in business by what is called State enterprise, but is really an expense and detriment to the country, for I know of no such undertaking that could not be more judiciously and economically worked by private enterprise. The object of State institutions is to make prices more reasonable to the citizens, but unless such enterprises make profits they are a menace to the country, and a sure hindrance to inducing private capital to como here. Abolish your State trading. Private individuals can do it better and cheaper, and legitimate competition keeps prices reasonable, and there is no injustice, or evading charges that other traders have to meet, and citizen traders have no taxes to fall back on to make up discrepancies. Veritas. . Sir, —As there are still many men out of work in Auckland I conjecture that a few of them could be profitably employed at both St. Heliers and Kohimarama (especially the latter), in planting indigenous evergreen trees, such as pohutukawa and ngaio, along the beach, just above high-water mark. This would, in a few years, afford delightful shade for bathers and the general public, besides adding .arboreal beauty to the environment. Now is the time to take action in this project, as the planting season of 1928 is fast drawing to its close. Therefore, an effort should be made immediately to advance a small sum of money for this necessary work. Pro Bono Publico.
