ADDITIONAL MAIN HIGHWAYS TINOPAI TELEPHONE OFFICE. *[BX TELEGRAM.—OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] PAPAKOA, Friday. AL a meeting of the Otamatea County Council it was stated that Mr. J. I'. Mills being unable to act as assessor for the Matakohe and Ruawai ridings, owing to ill-health, Mr. M. N. Skelton had been appointed. It was stated that the, following' roads had been gazetted additional main highways Whakapirau to Maungaturoto railway station, about seven miles; and Ruawai Creamery to Armstrong's corner, about 3i miles. Correspondence was read from the Rodney County Council and from Mr. J. 11. Blackwell regarding merging a portion of Rodney County,- at Hakaru, in the Otamatea County. It was agreed to take tho initial steps. The Public Works Department advised that the council's request for £365 on a £2 for £1 basis for the Tnra-Mangawai Road could not be acceded to. It was resolved to ask for a reduced grant, pound for pound. A deficiency of £36 on running the Tinopai telephone "oflicc was reported, and ifc was decided to write to the Postal Department suggesting that the office be closed. The Department, of Justice wrote thanking the council for the gift of a site for.the Courthouse at Maungaturoto, which it was hoped to erect shortly. It was reported that the Main Highways I Board's surveyors were engaged laying out the road from Wellsford northward, through Topuni and Kaivvaka, toward Maungaturoto. 'The question of hydro-electric power was considered. The chairman said it was advisable (o work in with as large a scheme as possible, including neighbouring counties, in order to cheapen the supply. The load survey for Otamatea County would be proceeded with. It, was resolved to write to the Whnngarei County Council and the Hobson Power Board advising them that. Otamatea Council was actively taking up the load survev.
It was reported that the Hobson County Council would consider subsidising the Raupo-Tikinui ferry if tlio traffic warranted.
