RACES AND BUSINESS.
COUNTRY CLUB MEETINGS.
"TOO MANY IN AUCKLAND."LESS MONEY FOR TRADING. The suggestion that too many race meetings affect business was supported by the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The council decided to endorse the resolution of the Auckland Retail Drapers' Association suggesting that in the event of a racing club being unable to hold a meeting on its - own course, a permit should only be granted to the club to hold the meeting on the nearest course. It was decided to forward the resolution to the proper authority. A letter from Mr. .J. R. Rendell stated there were too many racing days in Auckland, due to the country meetings being held in the city. Such a tendency was contrary to the interests of both wholesale and retail traders, because the increase in totalisator returns resulting from the holding of meetings near the centres of population, meant a reduction in the flow of money into ordinary trade channels. "The many racing days certainly have a bad effect on the takings of retail houses," said Mr. A. E. Clirikard. The chairman, Mr. M. Stewart, said he considered the association's resolution a good one. Often country race clubs held their meetings in Auckland when there were courses available much nearer their own. "Is this question not outside the scope of this chamber?" asked Mr. E. A. Brown. "I think we interfere in a lot of things that do not concern us. We have our fingers in.nearly every pie." Mr. Clinkard; This does concern ns, because it affects business. The motion of support was then carried.
