SITUATION IN SYRIA.
ANTI-FRENCH ASSEMBLY.
BID FOR INDEPENDENCE. A DISSOLUTION POSSIBLE. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received August 13, 9.5 p.m.) LONDON, AUK. 13. The Paris correspondent of the Daily Chronicle says France is faced with a serious situation in Syria. Events there forced M. Ponsot, High Commissioner, to suspend a debate in the newly-elected Parliament upon the proposed' constitution. As a result of the recent general election a Nationalist anti-French Assembly was returned, which claims the sole right to proclaim martial law and to conduct foreign relations. The Assembly refused M. Ponsot's request to drop these claims and a dissolution of Parliament is expected.
