ELECTIONS IN GREECE.
VENIZELOS ASSAILED.
MAJORITY ANTICIPATED. CIVIL WAR THE ALTERNATIVE. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received August 13, 9.5 p.m.) LONDON. AUK. 13. The Athens correspondent of the Daily Telegraph reports that in spite of the personalities and defamation indulged in by the local "gutter press" there is every prospect of the Premier, Mr. Venizelos, obtaining 165 of the 250 seats in the new Chamber of Deputies. The correspondent says 1,500,000 refugees from Thrace are likely to vote for Mr. Venizelos to a man. Moreover the average voter is desirous of ending political strife.
If the Royalists are returned it is obvious that there will be a period of civil war, whereas peace and foreign loans are urgent necessities for Greece.
MULTIPLE VOTING.
SCHEME TO CHECKMATE. ELECTOR'S COLOURED FINGER. (Received August 18, 7.55 p.m.) Times Cable. LONDON, Aug. 13. In order to prevent multiple voting the Premier of Greece, Mr. Venizelos, has agreed to the novel suggestion of a candidate, says the Athens correspondent of the Times. This is that electors of Athens, Piraeus and Salonica, having voted, shall dip one finger in coloured fluid which will bo indelible for 48 hours.
