ROAD FOR MOTORISTS.

AUCKLAND TO WELLINGTON. WORK ON DIRECT ROUTE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Monday. Motorists have already a choice of route between Wellington and Auckland, the western coastal routo and tho eastern coastal route, but great interest attaches to the more direct route at present under development by the Public Works Department. Already about £40,000 lias been spent upon the Wanganui-Raetihi section. All formation, with the exception of a few miles, has been completed, and arrangements for metalling the completed portion have been made. The Ilaetihi to Kaurimu section is nearly ready and from Raurimu to Taumarunui tho road is being done by the local bodies. An entirely new road is being made from the Ongarue Valley to tho Piopio Valley. This will be known as the Hiwi Road. Joining up with tho coastal route at Piopio, this will complete the most direct route from Wanganui to To Kuiti. When this is completed the shortest route will be via Wanganui, Horopito, Taumarunui and To Kuiti.

From Bulls, via fc'tratford, to To Kuiti the route is miles, whereas the route from Bulls, via Wanganui, Horopito and Tauinarunui, to Te Kuiti "ill be only 185; miles, a saving of 42 miles. The road from Tiahape to Ohakune has been metalled recently. A stictcli between Waioru and Karioi is not yet finished, as there are no funds to provide its quota of the cost. A northern route that is becoming increasingly popular is from Napier to Taupo. Ihis runs through clay or pumice country, but a new scheme is 'being tried of putting road oil on the pnmice, and it promises to make a good road. A further length of this surfacing will bo put on next summer.
