GROWTH OF POPULARITY. PAST YEAR UNDER REVIEW. British Wireless. RUGBY, June 17. The first annual report of the British Broadcasting Corporation says tho cost of wireless programmes in 1927 was about £7 an hour. There were more than 68,000 hours of transmission from all stations, music having occupied about twothirds of the programmes. Tho income of tho corporation in tho past year was more than £900,000. Of that sura moro than £BOO,OOO came from licences. The total expenditure was £770,000. Tho licences issued number about 2,400,000. Thoy showed an increase in the year of more than 200,000. Lessons by wireless are growing in favour in the schools, 4000 of which arc known to listen in to London and Daventry. Referring to experimental work tho report says: " Although unduo expectations as to Empire broadcasting in the near future are to bo discouraged, there is littlo doubt that tho prospects aro encouraging."
