WELLINGTON RECORDS.

SEVERE SHOCKS INDICATED. LOCALITY NOT ASCERTAINED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, June 18. Very severe earthquake shocks were recorded at the Kelburn Observatory at about 3 p.m. yesterday. The instruments are placed at right angles to one another. They gave vibration records of approximately two inches across. The minor earthquakes experienced recently in tho Wanganui and Otaki districts only caused the recording instruments to move a few tenths of an inch. The exact location of yesterday's earthquakes has not been worked out yet as the computations take some considerable time, but the distance to tho actual source is considered to be about 7000 miles. Perhaps they occurred along the South American coast, or in the vicinity of India. These earthquakes were recorded at Kelburn for three or four hours with a second smaller series of tremors a few hours afterwards. The Japanese earthquakes of 1923 gave indications at Kelburn of about the same magnitude as the present disturbance.
