AN INNOCENT YOUTH.
DISMISSAL OF CHARGE. UNTRUTHS TOLD TO POLICE. How an innocent clerk, aged 19, was arrested because of untruths told by another mail was revealed in the Police Court yesterday, when the youth was charged with converting a motor-car to his use a week ago. Evidence showed the car was owned by Harold J. (Jrunminu, a young man, and that it had been lent by Crimmins to young people after a party in order that they might drive to their homes. When travelling along Karangahape Road the car became involved in an accident. All the members of the party abandoned the car, fearing the arrival of the police. Accused was thrown out of the vehicle, and when a constable arrived he arrested accused and took him to the police station. In the meantime, in order to prevent -the police making inquiries as to who was in the car, it was reported it had been stolen. The Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: This is serious. An innocent young man is arrested and charged because of lies told to the police. No officer is to blame, but it should be a warning that lies should not be told to the police. It shows how innocent people can be harmed. The case will be dismissed. This is a case in which I can suppress accused's name.
