ALLEGATION OF THREAT.
LETTER TO SOLICITOR. STEWARD SENT FOR TRIAL. [BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON NORTH. Monday. In the Magistrate's Court to-day a ship's steward, Norman Ernest Stanley, was charged with sending to James Petrie Innes, solicitor, a lettel- containing a threat to kill his (accused's) wife. James Innes said he acted for Mrs. Stanley in drawing up a deed of separation between the accused and his wife. On December 5 he received a letter from New York written by accused in which he made a threat to shoot his wife and exterminate the family. Ivy May Stanley said she had received a tjumber of similar letters from her husband. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. In a statement to the police accused admitted writing the letters, but said he never meant to put the threats into effect. He was sorry for what he had done and had returned to New Zealand with the express purpose of apologising to those he had offended.
