The congregation of the Catholic Church held a children's fancy dress ball in the Howick Public Hali on Friday evening, June 1. The function was a great success and the varied fancy dresses worn by the children were greatly admired by the large audience of adults present. Supper was provided by the ladies of the committee. The monthly meeting of the Te Papapa League of Mothers was held, last week. The meeting took the form of a discussion, the subject, "Do Mothers Spoil Their Sons?" proving not merely an interesting one but as having an important bearing on many of the problems which arise later in the homo and in the nation. Among those present were Mesdames C. Marks (secretary), Jamison, Parker, Bently, Clover, Mulliins, Barfoot. Hussey, Hook, Smith, Angus, A. H. Smith, Mcßobie and Appleton. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the tea committee. The very latest thing in money-raising tea parties is "Mystery Trading." Each guest is asked to bring with her a mystery gift, wrapped up in paper ready to sell, and of the value of Is or more! And, of course, everybody is pledged also to buy somebody else's mystery parcel to take home with her. The net result is Is profit from each quest, for whatever cause is to benefit, especially if the tea is given by tho promoter of the scheme. Naturally, very few parcels are carried away unopened, and the revelations of the mystery prizes cause lots of merriment. Simpler, perhaps, to subscribe the money out of hand and save a shilling 1 But then you would miss a lot of fun, as well as the quite illusory satisfaction of getting what you have not really got at all, "something for nothing."
