ANNUAL TOURNAMENT BEGUN VICTORIA DEFEATS AUCKLAND. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . WELLINGTON, Friday. The annual inter-university hockey tournament for the Seddon Stick was begun to-day on a heavy ground. The Otago University defeated Canterbury College by 4 goals to 1, and. Victoria University College defeated Auckland, who won the contest last year, by 5 goals to 1. Play ,in the Otago v. Canterbury match was somewhat slow in the first half, which ended 3 —o in Otago's favour. In the second half each side scored one goal. The game between Victoria and Auckland was very even until the last 10 minutes, when with the score 1 all, Victoria quickly scored another 4 goals. In the first half play was fairly even. Adams scored from the right for Auckland, that being the only goal of the spell. Soon after the second spell opened McLeod sent the ball to Paul, who* went up and centred for Priestly to score. About eight minutes from time Simpson, Victoria's centreiforward, centred the ball, the Auckland goalkeeper lost his feet, and D. Priestly scored. Simpson then scored for Victoria and from the following bully at midfield he and Sykes went straight and Sykes scored. A few minutes later Simpson again scored. Mr. R. P. Staples was the referee. The Auckland goalkeeper, Winn, a third-grade player, played a fine game for Auckland, and was frequently applauded for his good saves, lladcliffe, the Auckland captain, at centrehalf, played a good game.
