CARD TABLE INCIDENT.

REMARKABLE BRIDGE HANDS. FULL SUIT TO EACH PLAYER. ASTONISHING OPENING BID. A sensation' was caused at a bridge party held in Auckland this week when at one table it was found each player had been dealt a complete suit, 13 spades, 13 hearts, 13 diamonds, and 13 clubs. The players were so astonished when they examined tli&ir hands that there was no jiroper bidding, although Mr. P. J. Goldfinch, who held 13 spades, declared a grand slam in spades.

In the excitement the hands were laid down and the extraordinary position revealed. There was some doubt whether the cards had been properly shuffled., but thoy were cut in the-usual, way. The pack was a new one, and the incident occurred at a small party of four tables given in aid of a charity. Mr. Goldfinch's wife was his partner and she held 13 diamonds, their opponents holding hearts and clubs respectively. Because of tho doubt about the shuffle the score was not counted, but Mr. Goldfinch's hand was worth 253 points, 100 for grand slam, 90 for .honours, and 63 for game. Such a distribution of the cards might not occur more than once in several hundred million deals, although an authentic case occurred in England and another in Maine, United States, last year.
