SPORT IN WAIMARINO.
GOOD SEASON FOR ANGLERS. LIBERATION OF TROUT FRY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] RAETIHI, Friday. The annual meeting of the Waimarino Acclimatisation Society was held this week, Mr. A. W. Ashwell presiding. The report stated there bad been an increase of £57 12s 6d in revenue from fishing licences sold during the season, the total amount being £272 17s 6d. Receipts from game licences decreased by £ll. Rainbow trout fry from the Kai'ioi hatchery had been liberated in streams as followsso,ooo Wanganui, 20,000 Retaruke, 15,000 Piopiotea, 20,000 Orautoha, 5000' Whakapapa, 25,000 Mangawhero, 5000 Twelve Mile Creek (Waiouru), 10,000 Lake Kuru, 10,000 Turakina, 16,000 National Park, and 400U Karioi. The season had been a - good one for anglers, and the fish were in good condition. Good average baskets were procurable in most of the streams. J.wo competitions were inaugurated, and a silver cup presented to the successful competitor. * The pheasantry had to be abandoned owing to it being damaged by heavy snow. Several parts of the district report pheasants and quail to be inor.e in evidence than on former occasions. From indications there appeared to be ail increasing number of opossums in the district. Notwithstanding the increase paid for the destruction of shags, they are still very much in evidence. Owing to the nature of the country in the district stoats and weasels are on the increase, and there is every indication that their numbers are very large. The chairman said ho considered that the Waimarino district w r as becoming more popular with outside anglers, and several had expressed their satisfaction at the quality of the streams. There were ample camping sites in the district, and he saw no reason why the society should not have continued prosperity. Tho following officers were elected: — President, Mr. A. W. Ashwell: vice-presi-dents, Messrs. T. Shout and W. McNie; council, Messrs. J. B. Dinwoodie, L. Fisher, E. L. Salmon, H. J. Angus, J. Jones, J. P. Proude, J. A. Morton, R. F. Wise and W. E. Gundy. At a council meeting, Mr. A. C. Henderson was reelected secretary.
