CHINESE WAR CRISIS.
RETREAT OF NORTHERNERS. PEKING TO BE EVACUATED. Australian Press Association—United Service SHANGHAI, May 31. Reports from North China indicate that the resistance of the Northern armies against the advancing Southerners has broken down and that orders for a general retreat have been given. As a sequel to a conference between tho Northern leaders Marshal Chang Tso-lin is reported to have decided to evacuate Peking, the occupation of which by the Southerners in a few clays is expected. This step was decided upon as a result of the capture of Paoting, the key city to Peking at the end of several days' heavy fighting. Dissension among tho Northern leaders was also partly responsible for Chang's decision to evacuate Flic capital.
