CLUB'S FUNDS STOLEN.
CITY COUNCIL EMPLOYEE. COURT ALLOWS PROBATION. Said to have been in the Auckland City Council's employ for 20 years, William. Davitt Duffin, aged 35, was charged in the Police Court yesterday with stealing sums of money totalling £3B, belonging to the City Council Recreation Club. "He was secretary to the club and failed to account for the money which he collected," said Chief-Detective Hammond. Pleading guilty for accused, Mr. Conlan said Duffin was a member of a respected Auckland family. For 47 years his father was employed by the council and his brother had been with the council for 20 years. 111-health had affected him and seven doctors had been obliged to attend him. Domestic trouble had resulted in his- wife and lie separating. Before Christmas he, had been in hospital and since Christmas he had worked only one month. Being behind in maintenance and asked to meet a warrant in respect of it, Duffin had parted with £ls of the club's money. After consulting with the piobation officer, (lie magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, admitted Duffin to probation for two vears. Restitution was ordered to lie made at the discretion of the officer.
