HOTELS IN WAITEMATA.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. AN APPLICATION DEFERRED. The annual meeting of tho Waitemata Licensing Committee was held at Devonport yesterday, the chairman, Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., presiding. The chairman stated the police report showed that several convictions had been recorded against Andrew Begg, licensee of the Masonic Hotel, and the committee was inclined to take a serious view of the conduct of the hotel. The licensee had recently been fined £2O for placing liquor in a bottle contrary to the description of tho contents contained on tho label. It was understood the licensee, had already been warned by the committee some years ago. Begg denied he had ever been warned previously. Sergeant Brown applied for an adjournment of the application for renewal of Begg's licence. After a short retirement to consider the question, the committee decided to defer action until September, when the application would again be considered. The chairman said the police report stated there had been an improvement in the conduct of the hotel since February. The following licences were renewed: — Esplanade Hotel (Henry Maitland Rider), Mon Desir Hotel (Frank Hawes) and Northcote Hotel (Edward Charles Davey).
