MARINE COOKS' STRIKE.
CHANCE OF SETTLEMENT. . ACUTE CRISIS OTHERWISE. TWENTY VESSELS LAID UP. (Received May 37, 5.35 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 27. Twenty ships are now laid up at the various ports in Australia awaiting cooks. The Union Company does not expect that any difficulty will arise in regard to the sailing of the Aorangi on Thursday. Some hope has arisen that the cooks' strike may be settled on Monday or Tuesday, but the position is critical. In the absence of an agreement the last coastal passenger ship, the Ormiston, will be tied up at Melbourne. It" is stated' that there is now a chance of the cooks resuming work on the shipowners* terms.
