EXPLOSIONS IN GRATE.
FIRE FLUNG INTO ROOM. FIVE REPORTS OCCUR. HOLE BLOWN IN CONCRETE. [BX TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday. An explosion oocurred in a fireplace at the residence of Mr. P. W. Roberts, Mahoe Street, Fitzroy, on Friday evening, and scattered sparks and embers about the sitting-room. The alarmed occupants gathered up the glowing fragments before much harm had been done. However, no sooner had calm been restored than another loud report came from the fireplace, causing another scatter. A few minutes later a third explosion of considerable force took place. Two further explosions of lesser degree then occurred, making five in all. An examination of the fireplace afterwards revealed that the main force of the explosions had apparently been expended downwards. A hole described as about 12in. in diameter had been made in the concrete bed of the fireplace. Mr. Roberts stated that investigations were being made to see if any light could be thrown on the cause of the explosions.
