WHITE AUSTRALIA POLICY.

CHALLENGE FROM EAST. LIFE AND DEATH ISSUE. AMERICAN VIEW OF PROBLEM. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Beceived May 22. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. May 21. The National Magazine, which has a circulation of 2,000,000, lias an article entitled, " White Australia, the Low Pressure Centre of the Globe," by Mr. Lothrop Stoddard, who several years ago became sensationally famous by his observations on tho colour problem. Tho article says in one part: " Australia is the focal point where extending forces from tho East and tho West confront each other most sharply and irreconcilably. It is the logical storm centre -where, if potentially hostile forces should be unleashed, the hurricane winds of race war would begin to blow. " Let there be no mistake. We Americans will be in it too, if the war storm breaks over Australia. America couid never stand by and see Australia overwhelmed by Asia. Our Pacific Coast would leap to arms at the first shots of such a war. " The. outstanding fact which catches cur eye i:> that Australia is a very young country. All this explains why Australia to-day is so undeveloped and so thinly peopled. But give Australia time and security from the Asiatic peril and ishe ought: ultimately to become a nation •strong enough to guard against any posfcible attack." " How large will young Australia have grown when the Pacific storm winds begin to blow ? A White Australia—that is the ■watchword which unites Australians of every class and creed. So Australia defies a clamorous Asia, and swears to keep Australia a white man's land, or to go down fighting to the last. " The United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand believe that the exclusion of wholesale Asiatic immigration is literally a life and death issue. Such is the bond between us, and that is why we should all stand together on this basic principle of self-preservation, and that is why, if Asia ever challenges a White Australia, "we Americans will be in it too, because ' the guns 'would go off of themselves." " Mr. Lothrop Stoddard's book, " The Rising Tide of Colour Against White World Supremacy," caused a great deal of interest in 1920. He has also written " Present-day Europe—lts National States of Mind " (1917), " Tho Stakes of the War " (1918), " The Revolt Against Civilisation " (1923) and" "Racial Realities in Europe " (1924). Ha is a graduate of Harvard University and a member of the Massachusetts Bar and of various American learned societies connected with sociology and genetics.
