ATHENIC AS WHALER.
SHIP BOUGHT BY NORWEGIAN USE IN SOUTH POLAR SEAS. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received May 22, 5.25 p.m.) LONDON. May 22. The Daily Telegraph says it is informed that the steamer Athenic, which has been purchased by Mr. A. Jahre, chairman of the whaling companies of Norway, will be converted into a whaler for use in the South Polar seas. The refitting will take three months, and will cost £IOO,OOO. She will start on her new career as scon as possible, with a crew of 200 men. The Athenic is one of the White Star Line, and has since 1918 traded to New Zealand under the flag of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line. She is a vessel of 12,366 tons, and was built in 1901 and engined by Messrs. Harland and Wolff, of Belfast. She is 500 ft. long and 65ft. wide. She left New Zealand for England last January and reached there on March 8.
