ANZAC DAY.

Sir,—ln April of 1923 the Soldiers' Mothers' League passed a resolution that in future the day set apart for the observance of Anzac Day shall be the Sunday nearest to April 25, among the reasons given being that the general observance of this day involves an annual tax on workers, and that the landing was effected on a Sunday, and that Sunday was the more appropriate day for commemoration. This resolution was submitted to all Auckland and suburban M.P.'s, the P. and T., together with the larger trades unions (who replied with one exception., and that was fifty-fifty on weekly wage), agreeing with the attitude adopted by the Soldiers' Mothers' League. At this time an appeal came before the Arbitration Court against the decision of the magistrate that an employer was not bound to pay an employee on Anzac Day, being a Sunday. This appeal was not upheld. The Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, ai, its yearly meeting, passed a resolution that Anzac Day be observed on the Sunday nearest to the 25th. E. Nicol. Hon. Secretary, S.M. League.
