WANGANUI FRAUD CASE.
BUSINESS MEN VICTIMISED. SEQUEL IN POLICE COURT. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WANGANUI, Tuesday. Three charges of having attempted to obtain credit by fraud were admitted by John Edward Weldon, a middle-aged man, in the Police Court to-day. It was stated that Weldon first engaged a taxi proprietor of New Plymouth to drive him to Wanganui. On the way he called at several dairy factories, leading the taxi proprietor to believe he was an inspector of machinery. At Wanganui he got the taxi driver to drive him on to Marton, where he stayed the night, and returned to Wanganui the next morning. He asked the driver ,to meet him in the afternoon, but did not keep an appointment to pay his account, £ls. On May 7 Weldon interviewed a land agent and signed up for the purchase of a seven-roomed house at St. John's Hill, intimating that he would pay cash and that he was from the West Coast and had a banking account at Westport. He then, after most careful negotiations, arranged for the purchase of £437 worth of furniture. . With an introduction from the furnishing firm, he then arranged with a carpenter to make about £l6O worth of alterations to the house and for another firm to thoroughly renovate the interior. Work was started. Accused ran up an account of £2 15s with a Wanganui taxi driver. Following a reply from a bank at Westport.-that accused had no funds there, accused left Wanganui. He was arrested at WellingAccused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
