PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.
LIVE-PIGEON SHOOTING. A meeting of the executive committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the new offices, Dilworth Building, this week. Mr. L. Rhodes presided. The assistance of the society in a Dominion-wide movement to have the shooting of live pigeons suppressed by law was sought in a letter from the Hon. G. M. Thomson, forwarded by the Olago Society. The suggestion was made by the latter that S.P.C.A. societies throughout New Zealand should urge local members of Parliament to support Mr. Thomson's bill when brought forward at the forthcoming session. The practice of live-pigeon shooting had been prohibited in England, and its suppression in New Zealand was long overdue. The committee decided to give support to the' ; Otago Society's suggestion. The matter of vivisection was introduced in a letter from the New Zealand Humanitarian Society, in which the society was asked to co-operate in calling a conference, at which the subject could be thoroughly discussed. It was unanimously agreed that full support should be given to tho proposal. The establishment of a dogs' home was discussed at some length, and a subcommittee appointed to go into details of a practical scheme. As the result of a jumble sale held last week the funds of the society have benefited to the extent of over £SO.
