MAINTENANCE OF WIFE.
WEALTHY MAN CHARGED. "EXTRAORDINARY PROCEEDINGS." [BY TELEGRArH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 HAMILTON, Tuesday. A charge of attempting to leave his wife without adequate maintenance was preferred against a man, asserted by his counsel to be wealthy, who appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-day beforo Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M. Senior-Sergeant Sweeney said the man had been arrested this morning on warrant from Pahiatua and the police asked for a remand for him to appear at the latter place. Mr. Strang commented upon what he described as the extraordinary proceedings adopted in arresting his client. Defendant, he said, was separated from his wife and a legal agreement was in force, under which he paid her £4 10s a week and an unmarried daughter £2 a week. He had remitted these sums with unfailing regularity. Defendant was a man of very good standing, was a justice of the peace and was wealthy. Pie held two good first mortgages, one for £4OOO and the other for £3BOO, in the Manawatu district. He also owned two unencumbered farms in Manawatu and n shop, unencumbered, in the main street at Dannevirke. He was quite at a loss to understand the E resent extraordinary proceedings against im. Mr. Strang said he thought the root of the present proceedings was a married daughter of defendant. The magistrate remanded defendant to appear at Pahiatua on June 28. Bail was allowed and defendant's name was suppressed in the meantime.
