SOME RECOGNITION DUE.
Sir, —Few men who have done much for Auckland have been allowed to leave the city without recognition, but that is what has happened in the case of Mr. R. H. Packwood, resident engineer of the Public Works Department. While he was in charge of the railway deviation works he was able to do several "good turns" on the route, and an impressive list of them has been published in the Herald. Residents of Parnell should be grateful that he so planned and contrived as to preserve Judge's Bay for them, both for boats and batlnng; residents around the Orakei Basin owe him thanks for preserving this fine sheet of water as a splendid lake, no longer influenced by tides; patrons of Parnell baths also have him to thank for improving the sea-water supply, and it is not his fault that the ocean waters are not all they should be. These are only a few of the "good turns" done by Mr. Packwood, en route to Westfield, and Ins obliging attitude throughout has been in great contrast to the arbitrary methods sometimes adopted by Government servants. I hope Auckland will yet acknowledge her debt to him. Grateful.
