ONEHUNGA BY-ELECTION.

Sir, —In reference to the paragraph in Saturday's Herald regarding the recent Onehunga Borough Council by-election being held two days later than it should have been, I would like to point out that the day of the election was fixed by myself, in conjunction with the under-secre-tary for the Department of Internal Affairs, as, owing to the rigidity of the Local Elections and Polls Amendment Act, 1926, the ouly four days on which the election could be held fell during the Easier holidays, commencing on Good Friday. It was out of the question to hold the election on these days, and I therefore deemed it more convenient to all concerned to select a day when most of the electors, except a few of the privileged ones, such as lawyers, sharebrokers, etc., had returned from their holidays. H. A. Yockney. Town Clerk.
