QUINNAT SALMON NETTING.
REPLY TO STATEMENTS.
ATTITUDE OF DEPARTMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Sunday.
Regarding statements made in the South Island thai the netting of quiimat salmon by the Marine Department and the issue of private netting lic&ices was somewhat premature, in view of the fact that the salmon were still becoming established, Mr. A. E. HcffoH, chief inspector of fisheries, said the talk about unrestricted netting was nonsense. Netting had not been proved to diminish the stock. The department must consider the" utilisation of fishing for the general good of the public, and it would naturally endeavour to hold the balance fairly between commercial considerations and sporting interests.
