POLICE COURT NEWS.
THEFT CHARGES ADMITTED. SIX MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.
Described as being a menace to . any neighbourhood, Leslie Clifford Arthur Payne, aged 27. appeared in the Police Court yesterday charged with stealing two tents and an overcoat in Turakina Valley. He was also charged with stealing £5 belonging to a woman at Palmerston North, and with the theft of a bicycle at Marton. To each charge accused pleaded guilty. The three offences were committed in April, 1927. Characterising Payne as an habitual thief Chief-Detective Hammond said accused had a long list of convictions. On each charge accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, two of the terms to.be cumulative.
After spending eight days in prison William Carter, a young man, appeared charged with obtaining by false pretences a suit of clothes from a city tailor. "He got the suit by presenting a forged order," Chief-Detective Hammond said. As accused had &pent over a week in gaol the magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, convicted him and ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
Sentence of three months' imprisonment was passed on Rangi Roto, aged 127, who pleaded guilty to stealing a pair of trousers from a tailor's shop in the city.
