SEASON'S FIXTURES. April 28—Wellington Trotting Club. May 3 and s—Forburys—Forbury Park Trotting Club. May s—Cambridge Trotting Club. June 23, 27—Auckland Trotting Club. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. " Kia Ora." Paorata.—Margaret Wallace raced at To A roll a on Saturday in the nomination of Mr. E. G. Sandall. She is engaged at the Cambridge meeting next week. TE AROHA MEETING. NOTES ON THE FORM.

BY PICADOR.

The Te Arena Trotting Club's meeting was attended with success. There was an increase of £2625 10s in the totalisator turnover and the receipts from other sources would no doubt be better than the previous year. The Te Arolia Club is only in its infancy and it is good to know that its position is becoming stronger each year. The Waitoa Handicap proved easy lor Zealous, who sot to the front quickly and led all the way. With a penalty of 24yds. for her win, she was produced again in the Ruakaka Handicap, but was never prominent at any stage Zealous is a six-year-old mare by The Pointer from a Hova mare and may be susceptible to further im'imvemeut, although she uiny never t;e good. i.l bau taken Lord llaidane a long time to win a race, but he appears to have become Bolid. for, after running second in the Waitoa Handicap, he came out later on and won the Ruakaka Handicap. The Good Gift gelding returned his supporters two nico dividends and there is reason to believe that his connections were quite prepared for his improved form. There was good support for Great Eyre in the Waitoa Handicap and she was the third best backed of the big field. She was up handy to the leaders for four furlongs and then skipped. After that she was never really dangerous and finished well back. Great Eyre is speedy, but does not appear to be of much account. Solidity is a great factor in trotters' events. This was instanced in tho Elstow Handicap. An outsider in Garwood hi". the front quickly and was so far in front with a. few furlongs to go that defeat looked impossible. However, the unexpected hap pened, for Garwood broke badly near the home turn and stopped to a walk, to eventually finish last. Through Garwood breaking tho backmarker, Lackiewood, who did not put a foot wrong on the journey, was enabled to win and it was a case where solidity triumphed. Garwood would only have had to keep hia correct gait to have scored easily. One of the most stylish performances of the meeting was that of Andovet in winning the Manavvaru Handicap. Andover was a bit slow to get going, but ran to the front in a few furlongs and for the remainder of the journey was always holding the oppo sitian without much trouble. His winning margin could have been a good deal bigger than it was and he is one of the winners at the meeting who should go on to better company.

It is a long time since Sebisca won a race and ho wan rather unlucky not to annex a stake at this meeting. He met a good pacer in Andover in the Manawara Handicap and was beaten into second place, and later in the day he finished third in the Waihou Handicap. Sebisca was badly interfered with by several horses breaking in front of him six furlongs from home in the latter event, otherwise he might have won. Form of Cup Runners. The victory of Gold Dial in the Te Aroha Trotting Cup was thoroughly do served. For most of the way she was outside two horses and undoubtedly covered more ground than anything else in the race. Nevertheless she finished on in the gamest possible fashion to get up in the last few strides to win narrowly from Taipare, who looked a winner at the distance. Gold Dial has been steadily on the improve and her success was a fitting reward for her consistency.

Lhe trotter Peter McKin,ney was the outsider of the field for the Te Aroha Trotting Cup, and he surprised many by the good race he went. Always up near tho leaders, he kept on solidly to the finish and was close up fourth. Peter McKinney is too erratic to over be entrusted with much confidence, but one of these days he may effect a surprise. Backers had no hesitation in making Tamerlane favourite for the Te Aroha Trotting Cup, despite his several recent defeats. The trotter hit the front at the end of four furlongs and was one of the leaders until nearing the home turn, where he dropped back quickly and eventually finished sixth. Tamerlane never looked like putting a foot wrong on the journey and it was a bit surprising to see the pacers head him off at the finish. Those who follow Tamerlane should be recouped for their losses on this occasion, for he is undoubtedly good 'and his form was probably not quite correct.

A number of keen judges expected Bingsn King to take a prominent part in the finish of the Te Aroha Trotting Cup, and until he stopped quickly thre® furlongs from home he seemed likely to do no. Before going a mile he had worked up into the lead on the inßide of Tamerlane, who came a bit wide turning into the straight the first time, and he was pacing freely till Nelson Tasker challenged across the top. Then Bingen King faded out to come home ninth.

That there was no fluke about his winning performance over two miles at Hawera Taipare demonstrated by running second in the Te Aroha Trotting Cup. Ho was a. good third choice in the betting, and. driven a nice race by R. A. McMillan, he looked sure to win as be took the lead near the home turn. The effort proved a little too much, and, weakening in the last little bit, he was outstayed by Gold Dial. Taipare is one of the most improved pacers in this province and should soon capture some more stake-money for his owner. Any chance Mars possessed in the Te Aroha Trotting Cup was extinguished at tho start, as ho failed to begin correctly and lest all his handicap. Once he got going, ho paced freely, but had no chance of catchi'ig the field. It is not like Mars to go away badly, as ho is usually a good beginner. Nelson Tasker's second in tho Thames Trotting Cup last month indicated that he wns improving in stamina. This he confirmed by finishing a close ithird in the Te Aroha Trotting Cup. It is probable that he would have been ti little closer if ho had been more patiently driven, as his driver rushed him to tho front about three furlongs from home. This effort left Nelson Tasker without any dash at the finish and he was a tired horse in the straight. The Nelson Bingen horso also contested the mile saddle event later in the day, but never got near the leaders. Partial to Course. Horizon is evidently partial to tho Te Aroha course. Last season he opened hi 3 winning account there in the Waitoa Han dicap, and it was not until he won the Hot Springs Handicap at this meeting that he gained another success. Horizon was lucky to beat Haerenga Pai, who lost a lot of ground at the start, but is an improved pacer and may yet do better. Those who made Haerenga Pai favourite for tho Hot Springs Handicap experienced an ■unpleasant shock when she failed to begin correctly. The three-year-old filly lost so much ground that most people gave her up, but she paced in fine Btyle once she got going and saved her supporters a good portion of ,their investments by finishing second. Haerenga Pai has notched a win and two seconds in her last three starts and looks like making a very useful mare.

Great Ballin seems to be getting mora aolid and may yet do a good deal better. After missing a place in the Waitoa JEaudi-

cap, he nearly effected ft big surprise in the Ruakaka Handicap, wherein he was only beaten a neck. It will bo necessary for Great Ballin to make a lot of improvement before he is good, but he is at an aze where progress is likely. Several defeats since she won at Claudelands have caused Etla Cole's reputation to fade and she was only sixth choice witli backers for the Waihou Handicap. 'H ia Petorwah filly broke up at the start, but wont a fair race without going solidly all the way. Despite her recent defeats, alio is still to be regarded as a promising trotter, but age and racing may be required to develop her powers properly. As yet she 's not too solid.

One of the surprises of the meeting was the heavy backing of Harris, who was sent out second favourite for the Farewell Handicap. Harris has never been of much account and about three years ago he was given away and subsequently sold at a small figure. In the actual race the St. Kevin gelding broke up badly at the start and tailed the field home. It would not appear that he i 3 likely to nhow any marked improvement. First out and first home describes the victory of Charming Pronto in the mile saddle event. The Don Pronto gelding began in great stylo and never looked like being beaten, although Gold Cast got within a length of him in the straight. It has taken Charming Pronto a long time to win a race, but he is a reliable customer, who usually does everything right, and has yet time to make further progress. The Te Awamutu trainer, A. Broughton, was associated with three winners at the meeting, driving Audover and Zealous and riding Charming Pronto to victory. Broughton's services for riding and driving are always in demand and this is not surprising, as he is a versatile and accomplished horseman. The winners he steered on Saturday all came from different stables. CAMBRIDGE MEETING. LIST OF THE HANDICAPS. |BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HAMILTON. Monday.
