MR. 0. E. BURTON TO STAND.
CHRISTIAN SOCIALIST LABEL.
Tho new Eden seat will bo contested at the general election by Mr. 0. E. Burton, who announces lie will stand as a Christian Socialist. Mr. V. H. Potter, M.P. for Roskill, has also announced his candidature ior the seat.
Mr. 0. E. Burton is a comparatively young man. He served in the Great War, leaving New Zealand in the Medical Corps with the Third Reinforcements. He saw service in the Gallipoli and Egyptian campaigns and later on the Western Front in France and Belgium, where he transferred to the infantry. In 1918 he received a commission and also holds the Military Medal and French Medaille d'Honneur. Since the war Mr. Burton has written the official history of the Auckland Regiment and a brief history of the New Zealanders' port in tho war. Ho has also become well-known in Auckland as a controversialist, particularly as an anti-militarist and prohibitionist. In politics his trend has been toward the extreme Left, although he has not identified himself with the Labour Party. Mr. Burton has been a school teacher at Whangarata, near Tuakau, for tho last three years.
