AUCKLAND WEEKLY NEWS.

SUPERB ILLUSTRATIONS.

TO-DAY'S SPLENDID ISSUE.

New Zealand's national illustrated journal, the Auckland Weekly News, provides its readers this week with a large 'pictorial section of outstanding excellence. A greater demand for copies than usual is anticipated as several of the subjects specially featured are admirably suited for conveying to friends in other lands a striking impression of New Zealand life and scenery. In this respect the centre-double page is sure of wido appreciation. It is a magnificent Maori study, reproduced on a large scale, depicting well-known guides and poi-dancers of Rotorua, playing the ancient native game of ti ringa or matimati. The camera has caught the expressions of the players and onlookers wonderfully well, while a carved Maori house in the background and the beautiful native dresses combine to make a picture that will be preserved in many homes.

An event of great national interest, the departure of the 1928 All Blacks for South Africa, is another subject admirably recorded. The frontispiece is devoted to excellent snapshots of play in the exhibition match at Wellington, while the enthusiastic farewell by the huge crowd on Queen's Wharf is featured, together with a fine studio photograph of all the members assembled before departure. Another Sports item of Dominion-wide interest is the New Zealand university's annual inter-college tourney. The commencement of the deer-stalking season furn.shes some splendid hunting pictures secured in the Palmerston North district and on the snow tops of Mount Owen, Nelson province. The first photographs taken from the floor of the prehistoric forest revealed by the rushing waters of the diverted Waikato at Arapuni are of exceptional interest, while new views of Christchurch from the air will also be examined with keen interest.

There are many further New Zealand subjects on the miscellaneous pages, gleaned from numerous sources throughout both Islands. The following are, perhaps, outstanding:—Paeroa's new bridge across the Ohinemuri River, officially opened; the Dominion amateur golf champion in action: gathering the grape harvest in the Henderson district; the annual regatta at Queenstown; holiday motor traffic on the main south road of Canterbury; holiday-makers at Muriwai; Cape Brett lighthouse from a new angle; Whangaici's busiest centre; motor-car plunges over a 40ft. bank near Hawera; North Auckland coastal scenes; holiday motoring in the Urewera; annual chopping contests at Tiknkino: earlv morning on Lake Rotorua; New Zealand's champion racehorse; and the two Hawke's Bav men who lead the Dominion in cricket and football.
