EAST COAST RAILWAY.

EXTENSION NOT FEASIBLE.

INSPECTION BY OFFICIALS.

[BY lELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Friday.

The Bay of Plenty Development League has received a reply from the Minister of Public Works, Hon. K. S. Williams, regarding the East Coast railway beyond Taneatua: The Minister says that with the commitments on other works that are now in progress he cannot see that the Government can do anything toward the further extension of this railway. Moreover, as he indicated in Opotiki about two years ago, he is of the opinion that no further extension from Tarteatua should be undertaken until the whole question of the route of the connection with Gis-. borne is considered.

To-day Mr. A. J. Baker, inspecting engineer of the Public Works Department,, and Mr. J. K. Lowe, district engineer of the Railway Department at Auckland, accompanied by Mr. W. Watk nson, district engineer of the Public Works Department at Tauranga, inspected that portion of the railway from Tauranga to Tahawai, with a view to giving a certificate for the running of trains.
