A series of misfortunes resulted in the bankruptcy of Roger Newnes, a farmer, of Te Awamatu, who met his creditors before the acting-official assignee, Mr. V. R. Crowhursl, in Hamilton to-day.

Bankrupt said he was a soldier settler who took up a section 16 miles from Te Awamutu about seven years ago. Butter prices fell and the value of his farm was reduced from £lBlO to £B4O, with a proportionate drop in rent. The farm would not carry sufficient stock. Rabbits had been a serious menace, a valuable ball had been drowned, three horses died, all his pigs had broken out and had been poisoned. The recent drought had affected production and in view of his losses lie found it impossible to carry oa. Unsecured debts totalled £3lO 10s 9d and his assets were valued at £llO4, less £969 due to secured creditors.

Mr.. Crowhurst said bankrupt appeared to have worked hard and to have suffered great hardship. There was no quorum of creditors present and no resolution was passed.
