MESSINA EARTHQUAKE.
SHOCK LASTS TEN SECONDS. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE. A. and N.Z. LONDON. March 7. Despatches from Messina, Sicily, say the district was shaken by the severest earthquake since the disaster of 1908. The shock lasted for 10 seconds. So far no loss of life has been reported, but a panic occurred, and the populace rushed into tho streets in terror. Many peopfe are camping in the open. Fortunately the buildings, which were erected after the 1908 earthquake, generally withstood the shocks, but the damago was considerable in some towns.
Messina has on several occasions boon ravaged by earthquakes, notabl.v in 1783 and 1908. On the latter occasion, on the morning of December 28. the flourishing and beautiful city was almost totally destroyed, and 77.283 lives were lost. The smaller towns of Keggio and Calabria were also destroyed. Tho cathedral at Messina was also left in ruins. It was a fine building begun in 1098. The centre of (he disturbance seemed to be in the Straits of Messina. \lt is thought that the crust of the earth in this region is gradually sinking.
