STRUCK BY STEEL ROPE.
BUSHMAN BADLY INJURED. k LONG JOURNEY TO HOSPITAL. [BY telegraph.—own CORRESPONDENT. ] TAUMARUNUI, Thursday. A bushman, James William Thornton, single, aged 47, employed in the Ongarue bush, was seriously injured while engaged in hauling a log. Mr. Thornton was standing between a winch and a log that was being hauled, wh'en a strap securing the log to the main winch rope gave way under the strain and the steel rope flew back and struck him. He sustained a fracture of the right arm and severe injuries to his ribs, ribs being badly broken. The injured man was brought to TanmSrunui, a distance of 30 miles, by ambulance. He was admitted to hospital and is progressing favourably.
