THE RAILWAYS.
Sir, —As one of the shareholders in "The New Zealand Railways, Unlimited," I desire to enter an emphatic protest against the proposals of the Prime Minister, who, as managing director, intimates his intention to spend severe,! million pounds sterling to bring the railways up to a standard that will mako them profitable. Such a statement on the part of Mr. Coates seems to mo to demand careful investigation, and indicates to some extent the need for a change in the management of this huge commercial concern. It seems that "The New Zealand Railways, Unlimited," has been run at -a loss for several years. There must be something wrong at such a deplorable state of affairs. A full statement should be submitted to shareholders (which in this instance comprise the electors of New Zealand), before a further huge expenditure as outlined by Mr. Coates is. incurred. A Shareholder.
