POLICE COURT NEWS.
A TROUBLESOME WOMAN.
THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.
Said to be the cause of many a fracas in Grey's Avenue, Cecilia Hunter, alias Ah Lap, aged 36, asked for leniency when charged in the Police Court yesterday with idle and disorderly conduct, drunkenness and breach of a prohibition order. "Accused had quite a heavy year in 1927, and her total record is 34 convictions," said Sub-Inspector McCarthy. Accused said she was fighting against drink.
A constable said the woman was a notorious nuisance in the Chinese quarter. He had warned her to keep away from Indians and Chinese. When she made her appearance in Grey's Avenue, a call for the police invariably followed. Witness had found accused drunk and had been asked by a Chinese shopkeeper to eject her from his premises.! Accused: You can sentence mc to life if you like. Life 13 not long enough io this world for me to care. The Magistrate, Mr. McKcan: I cannot do that. The sentence is three months on the charge of being idle and disorderly. Convictions without penalty were recorded on the minor charges. "Accused, has five children of his own and it was a case of drunken affection," said Mr. Dickson, on behalf of Alfred William Redman, aged 52, charged with drunkenness and assault on a child. Evidence was given by a woman who said accused accosted a child and asked her to accompany him to a beach. Mr. Dickson said accused had no recollection of the incident. The allegations of assault were very trivial. The magistrate, Mr. McKcan, said drunkenness was no excuse. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months.
