I ESCAPED PRISONER'S CRIMES. (
Extensive frauds with valueless cheques vere cleared up- in the Police Court yesterday, when William Scholes, aged 37,, and Edwin Andrew- Simpion, ' aged 29 | (Mr. Gregory), pleaded guilty to 17 charges of obtaining by false pretences goods and money to the total value of about £125. They were also charged jointly with attempting to obtain £7 with s valueless cheque. Scholes was alone charged with" escaping from custody on Julv 27, 1927, with obtaining U9 10s with three valueless cheques, and witn theft of a cheque-book., V«r. . Ghristchurch last July, and was sent Korth under escort to servo two years imprisonment in Mount Eden Gaol. He escaped from the train during a stoppage after passing Mercer on July 27. Iho recapture was effected on February 24 at. a house in Taylor Street, Morningside. Simpson had been apprehended on the tame day %vhile attempting to pass a Valueless cheque. Detective Knight said both accused had ; given every assistance in connecting *up the numerous offences.
Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in committing both men to the Supreme Court lor sentence, refused an application for bail for Simpson.
