MOTORISTS URGE AMENDMENT.

"If tho speed limits set out in tho Motor Vehicle Regulations are observed there will be congestion of traffic in every large city," said Mr. J. B. King when tho council of tho Auckland Automobile Association considered suggested amendments last evening. Advice was received from'the North island Motor Union to tho effect that the gazetting of the regulations was imminent and tnat there was little possibility of suggestions for amendment receiving consideration unless they were very important. Tho secretary, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, said tho regulations in their latest form retained tho national maximum speed limit of 35 miles an hour. This meant there was no open or deserted road in the Dominion upon which a driver could legally exceed this speed. Within the limits of boroughs and town districts a maximum of 25 miles an hour was prescribed. When approaching intersections, overtaking stationary omnibuses, or passing stationary trams bound in the opposite direction the limit of 15 miles nn hour would be applicable. On curves where visibility ahead was limited to 40ft. and inside safety /ones, 10 jniles an hour would bo the maximum. Excess of these limits would be deemed sufficient evidence to establish dangerous driving. Mr. H. C. Jones said he would challenge the officials who compiled the regulations to drive from Auckland to Wellington without committing a breach. It was resolved to communicate with the Prime Minister Objecting; to the regulations and to organise a deputation to discuss amendments with the Minister of Public Works.
