HOT WEATHER DIET.
FOOD VALUES. Everyone wishes to be cool during the summer months, but often the most ridiculous means are employed in an attempt to "coi.l off." On any hot day you will see a long line of perspiring people at any soda fountain waiting their turn to be served with soft drinks or ice cream. These soft drinks are usually composed of carbonated water flavoured with syrup and often ice cr.arn. The temperature of the body is not lowered in the slightest degree by these concoctions, in fact, after the first cold feeling in the mouth, the feeling of heat distress is always increased to a considerable extent, while the temperature of the body remains approximately the same Such drinks, high in heat units, make the circulation all th» more sluggish and only add to one's discomfort. In cold or hot weather the temperature of the body remains fairly constant at S8 3-5 degrees Fahrenheit.. Your only hope for relief from the uueasiness of a summer day is to keep the blood free from heavy" food material not needed for the repair of tissues and to increase elimination of toxins through the skin and breath. This is best accomplished by reducing your food to th<» minimum of necessity, drinking plenty of pure water and wearing as little clothing as possible. There is no single remedy so valuable as plain water, neither too hot nor too cold, and not spoiled by syrup flavours. Small amounts of pure fru't juices may be added if desired, but these should not be additionally sweetened Make your meals as much as possible fruits in season or the leafy green vegetable both cooked and in a salad form Keep the pores of the skin open by frequent bathing. Nude sun-baths taken each day assist in making more normal radiation, from the body, of the poisonous gases which make so much trouble by their retention Get up early and take a long walk in the cool of the morning, finishing with a cool shower bath, and you will find you will be comfortable the rest of the day while others are suffering with the usual perspiratory annoyances. If overweight, you will find this time a good opportunity for reducing. For every pound of flesh you lose will be rewarded with greater comfort. Study food values and eliminate everything made from flour. If you will do this you will be surprised how cool the summer will seem to you.
