HEALTHIER CHILDREN.

"The child of to-day is stronger, taller and heavier than the child of 1907. He is a better-nourished child," states Sir George Newman, the chief medical officer of the Board of Education, London. This is due, in his opinion, to medical care and supervision of the child before and during school life? and to "better nurture, the remedy of infective conditions which gravely impair physique, school meals, physical training, more fresh air, improved school sanitation." There has been also, in the opinion of this highly-competent authority, a great reform in the social life of the people, better housing conditions, better feeding, more cleanliness, better clothing. As a result there is less dental decay, fewer inflamed glands and tonsils, less tuberculosis and anaemia., a decline in severe rickets. The effects of malnutrition ara far less common; and there is no evidence of general physical deterioration, even as the result <*f the prolonged coal stoppage of 1926.
