In the fourth test cricket match at Johannesburg, England, in the first innings, made 265, and South Africa replied with 323. Ppnbles put up a plucky resistance and was difficult to* dislodge, a3 he declined to touch balls on the off. Taylor played with his old brilliancy except for one brief, period when he appeared affected by the rapid fall of wickets. He made his century iu 143 minutes. It is the first century made against the visitors. The tail played vigorously and pulled the game round. There were two short stoppages owing to rain. Deane and Cameron played faultless cricket and in % - race against the rain piled on runs. The partnership yielded 89 for the ninth wicket. The stand of Bissett and Vincent was exciting.
