A fire broko out this evening in the dyed and scoured wool store of the Kaiapoi Woollen ."Mills. Fanned by a strong north-eauierly wind the flames spread rapidly anJ the building and contents were completely destroyed. The if damage is estimated at £15,000. Tho woollen mill's brigade and the Kaiapoi Borough brigade had a desperate fight to save the large buildings of the mill. In this they were successful, the fireproof walls confining tho flames to tho wool store. While it> lasted, a period of nearly two hours, the fire was spectacular and when it was at its worst grave anxiety was felt for the safety of the mill. Dense volumes of smoke rose from the burning wool with occasional tongues of flame bursting through the roof. The brigades kept water playing on tho roof and held the fite from spread, ing beyond. No damage was done to the plant or to other buildings. The mill building 3 wero insured in several offices and the stock with Lloyd's. A five-roomed , form homestead situated in Hull's Road, Waiuku, owned and occupied by Mr. George Boi?'-ke, was destroyed by fire shortly after one o'clock this morning. Mr. and Mrs. Bourke were awakened by smoke and found the house burning fiercely. They had barely time to rescue their two children frora another room and were unable to save any of their furniture or effects. The house was insured for £550 in the Sun Office. A four-roomed dwelling in Mackay Street, owned and occupied by Mr. A. R. Harvey, was extensively damaged by fire shortly before eight o'clock last evening, and some of the contents were also lost, the balance being saved by neighbours who discovered the outbreak. Mrs. Harvey and the children were camped at the Waihi Beach. Mr. Harvey had gone out some hours before. The builiding was insured with the State Office -for £l4O and the furniture and effects for £l5O with the Northern Office. LARGE DWELLING LOST. LITTLE SAVED FROM FLAMES. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HUNTLY, Tuesday. A 13-roomed house, owned by Mr. W. J. Ralph, of Auckland, was totally destroyed by fire last night. The bouse was occupied by Air. and Mrs. BaKer, who are managing Mr. Ralph's estate at Mahuta, and they narrowly escaped after losing practically everything. A fire was discovered in one part of the house at about 7 o'clock, and the occupants suppressed it. Later on, a fairly strong wind arose, and this must have fanned some flames which had not ueen put out between the lining boards,, and in about an hour the house was burning fiercely. The building was a new one. The insurances are in the South British Offico OUTBREAK AT DUKED!*. BUSINESS PREMISES AFFECTED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. J DUNE DIN, Tuesday. Fire gutted the fitting room of G. W. Reilly, a tailor, in Frinces Street. Damage was done by smoko and water to F, and R. Woods, drapers. Mr. A. G. Neill, a solicitor, had valuable legal documents and references destroyed.
