UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
BURDEN ON LOCAL BODIES. MATTER FOR GOVERNMENT. The unemployment problem was discussed yesterday by Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Eoard, who has returned from the annual conference of the New Zealand Hospital Boards' Association. Mr. Wallace expressed the opinion that the time had arrived for the question to be dealt with by the Government, and the provision of relief should now be taken from the hands of local bodies, which had been called upon to shoulder a great deal of the responsibility in the past. It was generally felt among the hospital boards of the Dominion that some form of national relief should be established whereby men who were able and willing to work should be given employment and not be forced to rely upon charity for The position gave every indication of becoming more serious within the next few months, and officers of the Auckland board reported that there had been an increase since Christmas in applications for relief.
