SAFETY FIRST SOCIETY.
PROPOSED CHANGE OF NAME. DUKE OF YORK'S SUGGESTION. (Received January 28, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON. Jan. 98. At a meeting of the National Safety First Association a letter was received from the Duke of York, in which he said bis suggestion that the name of the society be changed apparently had been misunderstood. He did not wish to impose his views upon them, but wished °nly to point out that the title was detrimental. The Duke said people refused to assist the society on the ground that its title not in accord with British courage and sportsmanship. Nevertheless, he ■fas prepared to abide by the associa tion's decision. It was decided to consider alternative titles at the annual meeting in April. -At a recent meeting of the Safety First Association the chairman of the committee, Mr. .Icnkinson, said: "There is a growing feeling among school children that, the slogan '.Safety First' means 'Your own safety first, be blowed to anybody else's.' " A heated discission arose over a letter from the Duke of VorU, in which he suggested a change in the name of the association, because the present title lent itself to satire. The Duke expressed liis willingness to meet a deputation and to explain his reasons for desiring the alteration.
