WIRELESS PROGRESS.

IMPROVING THE BEAM.

RESEARCH BY MARCONI. A. and N.Z'. LONDON, Dec. 29. The radio possibilities for 1928 include wireless telephony to Australia. The date of starting depends on the result of the Marconi Company's experiments, the apparatus for which will not be completed until the results of the experiments with the Canadian beam are known. It is understood that the British Post Office authorities within a few weeks will announce that they have achieved perfectly secret transatlantic wireless telephony, by means of disintegration and of "turning over" the sound waves at the transmitting point, and piecing them together again at tho receiving point. Meanwhile, Mr. Franklin, Signor Marconi's right-hand man, is specially studying the cause and the remedy for the fading out of the Australian beam, which is now losing considerable traffic through the 12-hours* fading from the late afternoon. It is suspected that this is due to the summer-time radiation of heat from the sands of Australia's arid hinterland. It is hoped to overcome this next summer.
