QUALITY TEST APPLIED.

During a recent debate in the House of Commons on the Films Bill, Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, President of the Board of Trade, said the. number of feature films which would qualify for registration as British under the bill was, in 1925, 34; in 1926, 23; and in 1927, about 60. In addition, on November 10, there were 19 othern which were completed, 13 in course of production, and 44 scheduled for production.

Replying to a suggestion that the quality of the films might leave something to bo desired, Sir Philip explained that a trade committee had reviewed these British films from a box office point of view and had reported very favourably upon them. Taking the figure 10 as full marks the committee had given 22 per cent. 9 marks; 12 per cent. 8 to 9 marks, and 7.4 per cent. 7to 8 marks. The feature films, ho stated, were the films the Government wished to foster.
